Begin Today to Become Your Best Self

personal growth relationships Apr 03, 2018

It was a little odd having Easter and April Fool’s Day fall on the same day this year. Those dates haven’t lined up since 1945, so it’s a rare occurrence! I wonder how many people added a few tricks to their egg hunts? I heard one person’s idea was to cover raw eggs with chocolate so their friends would take a bite. Not exactly my idea of tasteful  joke!

But regardless of what strange things are happening, this time of year is a special reminder that life offers new beginnings. Every day brings an opportunity to experience life in a new way, and you have the power to make some healthy changes to put yourself on the road to being your best self.

Today you can:

Get rid of bad influences and habits. Every day we encounter things in our lives that would hold us back from being our best selves. Bad habits like smoking, criticizing, complaining and too much screen time are obvious roadblocks to good health, happiness and success. Toxic relationships or friendships that seem to lead you into poor choices (think, “hangover” or “regret”) may need to be purged in order to make room for relationships that challenge and encourage you toward your goals.

Make a positive decision. What would you like to be different in your life, and what is within your power to do about it? This is a question worth considering. If there is something you have been wanting to purchase, work out a plan to save or earn the money you will need. If you are feeling lonely or isolated, explore options for meeting people and making friends. Join a church or sports league, volunteer for a service organization or attend a support group. I believe one of the most rewarding decisions you can make is to invest in your spiritual life, as that is likely to have a positive impact on every other area. This may be a great time to further your education or just take a class in a subject that interests you. Every positive decision brings you closer to your best self.

Forgive a grudge. This isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it. When you hold on to anger, resentment and a desire to get revenge, you are slowly poisoning yourself. The grudge becomes a weight for you to carry and holds you back from joy, peace and freedom. When you let go of the offense, you drop the weight. If you make the decision today, you may have to make it again tomorrow and the next day, but I encourage you to make that decision as many times as it takes for your own well-being.

Read something enriching. Fiction or non-fiction – either one is fine as long as it challenges you to learn something or use your imagination. Many researchers have concluded that viewing electronic screens for too long is unhealthy for various reasons, but reading a real book or even an interesting magazine or journal can exercise your brain and take you away from your daily stresses for awhile. I am not opposed to reading on a device at all as there is an amazing amount of enriching information and entertainment available today, but your eyes and brain will thank you if you take a break and read from old-fashioned paper sometimes – especially within the hour before bed. Reading often inspires action toward developing your best self.

Focus on who you want to be. As you imagine yourself being the best version of You, be honest about the steps you need to take to get there. Are you tripping over a bad habit or a destructive attitude? Are you simply not making any effort right now? Take some time today to visualize how your life will look as you make one simple change at a time toward your best self. The process takes time, but the satisfaction of being the best you can be is a priceless reward.

What have you been wishing were different in your life? Is there something you can do today to move toward becoming your best self? We would love to hear from you!
