A Word from Dr. Linaman

“I have been providing counseling services to individuals, couples and families for over twenty-five years.  I work primarily with older adolescents and adults who are motivated and ready to discover new insights and solutions to the challenges they face.

Many of the patients I work with struggle with debilitating worry, fear and anxiety or feelings of sadness, despair and worthlessness. They’ve lost the energy, joy and hopefulness they once had and often feel like giving up on life. Some people find themselves facing difficult parenting challenges with their children and teens and feel discouraged, worried and stuck.

Others I work with are in marriages and relationships filled with destructive conflict or stony silence. Some suffer pain caused by abusive behaviors, mistrust, anger and addictions. The companionship, love and trust they once enjoyed have been replaced by disengagement, indifference and suspicion.

For me, there is no greater satisfaction than helping people gain the insights, overcome the obstacles, begin the healing process and move ahead into happier, more productive futures. I look forward to the opportunity to help you experience the peace, joy, fulfillment and hope you long for.”

"I can’t thank you enough for the help you gave me at a very dark time in my life. Your ability to listen and not pass judgment was tremendously helpful. You helped me to identify the negative beliefs I had about myself and my life in general and how they were influencing my emotions and outlook on the future. I now believe I can move forward with greater optimism and hope for the first time in many years. Thank you Dr. Linaman for all you do to help people who are stuck and in pain."

What You Can Expect

When preparing for your first counseling session it’s normal to feel a little nervous. In order to help you feel more at ease and to obtain better results we will describe some of what you can expect. In general, your first session will allow you and your counselor to meet and get to know more about each other. It will provide you the opportunity to determine if the relationship is a “good fit” and if your counselor is best suited to meet your specific needs. You will learn more as you read about the counseling process below.

The Counseling Process

During your first session, your counselor will ask relevant questions about you and your life. Some of the questions may include why you are seeking therapy, information about your personal history and current situation, and the symptoms you are experiencing, such as trouble sleeping, feeling sad or angry and/or having difficulty communicating with your spouse. Your counselor will use this information to develop a better understanding of your problem. He will share his initial impressions as well as preliminary recommendations for moving forward toward healing and/or resolution.

Counseling is a cooperative effort. Taking an active role in the session will help you gain much more from the experience. During your session we encourage you to share openly and honestly about your needs. Prior to your session, practice describing “what’s wrong” and how you are feeling about the problem. It can also be helpful to write down the reasons for seeking help. Feel free to ask questions or for your counselor to repeat anything you may not understand. It’s also important to share the thoughts and feelings going through your mind during your first session. This helps both you and your counselor gain important insights. Many patients write notes during their sessions.

Do your best to come to your first session with realistic expectations. Counseling is rarely, if ever, a quick fix for your problem; rather it is a process. By working together with your counselor, a strong relationship can be established and positive results achieved. Through counseling many individuals and couples gain better understanding of themselves and their relationships and learn how to make better decisions, communicate more effectively and manage and cope with emotions more consistently. We respect your decision to participate in the counseling process and look forward to being a part of your personal growth and success.
